Stress over grades; a feeling that students know all too well. Although we might be reassured that it's only one grade and that ‘it's not a big deal’ we still get restless and anxious whenever we get that notification for a grade. A study done by the Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD) proves that cortisol--a stress hormone--spikes whenever a student finds that they have gotten a bad or lower grade than expected. In some cases, cortisol drops back down a day or so after they got the news. On the other hand, for other students, they can get stuck in this situation and this makes it difficult for them to keep going on. Some of the setbacks that having higher cortisol levels or chronic stress can cause include; a suppressed immune system, lower the functioning in the brain, and can cause the brain to become overly reactive. In order to fix this problem, or at least help lower the amount of stress students face, schools should reach out and see what causes students to become so stressed and how they can help make their high school experience much easier. If you're feeling stressed over grades, reach out to your teachers. Many students also have a lot of pressure from their families to do well, or compare themselves to others, among other things beyond simple drive to succeed. Always reach out to someone you trust to talk to if you're feeling stressed or anxious, and know that those feelings are valid and shared by many other students as well.
